Desert Island Drama

You're on a year-long luxury world cruise. You have pretty much all of your favorite clothes and things with you. Let's say you were allowed 4 trunks of stuff on board.

You piss someone off and end up being ejected on a desert island. You get to take one backpack full of stuff with you. What do you take? Remember, if you take your St Bernard Dog, there isn't going to be room for much else in the backpack... Let's assume there is a palm tree or two and a cellar of monkeys to provide sustenance. Some of the monkeys run a desalination plant, so water is a given. And we'll assume that you can expect rescue in 6-12 months.

What do you take? In the following categories? None is a fine answer in any category, and don't forget the volume issue.....

Shoes
Books
Weapons
Candy
Pet
Toys
Toiletries
Gadgets
Liquor (they're allowing you one bottle from the bar)
Games
Paperwork
Linens
Electronics
Clothes
Food (must already be in your luggage/cabin)
Sports/exercise equipment
Hobby stuff
Anything Else

Shoes - flip flops, sneakers
Books - blank notebook (I'll write my own book)
Weapons - sling shot and switchblade knife
Candy - none
Pet - none
Toys - not needed
Toiletries - sunblock and bottle of organic liquid soap
Gadgets - matches, pot (cooking kind)
Liquor (they're allowing you one bottle from the bar) - bottle of Everclear
Games - not needed
Paperwork - oh god no
Linens - thermal blanket
Electronics - whatever for?
Clothes - two shorts, two t-shirts, 1 pr leggings, floppy hat
Food (must already be in your luggage/cabin) - jar of peanut butter, protein bars
Sports/exercise equipment - not needed
Hobby stuff - not needed
Anything Else - pencils and pencil sharpener for writing

great start... I got flipflops and sneakers too... then I got sidetracked by books....

Scrabble dictionaries (OSW and OSPD) and scrabble game would be on my list. And the compact thesaurus. I guess I'd live without the rest.

I'd only have my penknife with me. And a kitchen knife. So I guess those would be my weapons.

Toiletries: toothbrush and paste. razors. lenses and solutions. moisturiser, sunblock, chapstick. Are sunglasses toiletries?

more later

I'm just going to assume the island is like the one I was on over Christmas, which was very lovely by the way, but totally devoid of any mod cons except a self composting toilet block (with no running water)

Shoes - reef shoes
Books - fish identification manual
Weapons - spear gun, knife and steel
Candy - nope
Pet - nope
Toys - nope
Toiletries - several large boxes of tampons, soap
Gadgets - gas lighter, fuel, skillet
Liquor (they're allowing you one bottle from the bar) - nope
Games - nope
Paperwork - nope
Linens - sleeping bag
Electronics - nope
Clothes - board shorts, swimmers, undies, Tshirts.
Food (must already be in your luggage/cabin) - nope
Sports/exercise equipment - couldn't fit it in my backpack, but a kayak would be good. Realistically, snorkel gear.
Hobby stuff - handline for fishing
Anything Else - small tarp and some rope

So I have to ask... would you guys really have taken a sleeping bag and thermal blanket on a luxury cruise?

monster 03-02-2011 10:40 PM

tampons. bugger. life's a bitch. I guess I might have remembered them if they were in the cabin.....

Aliantha 03-02-2011 10:40 PM

They'd have thermal blankets in the first aid kit, and maybe I'd take a sleeping bag. You can get some that roll up pretty small, and are good as an extra blanket too if it happens to be cold.

monster 03-02-2011 10:42 PM

mmkay, proceed...

monster 03-02-2011 10:44 PM

and the slingshot and skillet?

Even we don't travel with skillets and we always travel with tea-kettles and toasters

Stormieweather 03-02-2011 10:44 PM

Technically, there should be some sort of thermal blanket on the bed or a spare in the cabin. They don't take up much room and they adjust to body temp. And yeah...I forgot the damn tampons.

monster 03-02-2011 10:45 PM

we could always use the monkeys?

Aliantha 03-02-2011 10:46 PM

I just assumed that you'd get to swipe a few bits and pieces from the galley to provide for yourself.

You'd better, cause I'm not sharing my tampons!

monster 03-02-2011 11:08 PM

I would have them in the cabin for a year-long cruise, so I hope I'd notice them while packing....
