At this particular moment David Johansen is screaming in my ear..

It's just like all of your leathers darling, they don't scare me
I know it's really only leatherette

(This is so 80s!)

Rip Her to Shreds

(Hey! Psst PSST! Here she comes now.)
Oh, you know her, would you look at that hair
Yeah, you know her, check out those shoes
She looks like she stepped out of the middle of somebody's blues

She looks like the Sunday comics
She thinks she's Brenda Starr
Her nose job is real atomic
All she needs is an old knife scar

Yeah, she's so dull, come on rip her to shreds
She's so dull, come on rip her to shreds

Oh, you know her, "Miss Groupie Supreme"
Yeah, you know her, "Vera Vogue" on parade
Red eye shadow! Green mascara!
Yuck! She's too much

She looks like she don't know better
A case of partial extreme
Dressed in a Robert Hall sweater
Acting like a soap opera queen

Yeah, she's so dull, come on rip her to shreds
She's so dull, come on rip her to shreds

She got the nerve to tell me she's not on it
But her expression is too serene
Yeah, she looks like she washes with Comet
Always looking to create a scene

Yeah, she's so dull, come on rip her to shreds
She's so dull, come on rip her to shreds
She's so dull. Rip her to shreds

Oh, you know her, "Miss Groupie Supreme"
Yeah, you know her, "Vera Vogue" on parade
Yeah, you know her, with the fish-eating grin
She's so dull

Yeah, she got the nerve to tell me!
Huh, she's so dull
Yeah, there she goes now
She making out with King Kong
She take her boat to Hong Kong
Well, bye bye sugar
And not a minute too soon

--Blondie

Why it popped into my head, I do not know.

Elvis Costello's All Grown Up
(snipped)
Quote:

All grown up
And you don't care anymore
And you hate all the people that you used to adore
And you despise all the rumours and lies of the life you led before

Did I hear you right?
You're feeling hounded and pushed around
You want to just lay down and die
If all of this life has been such a big disappointment to you
Why don't you stop blaming some guy
And go give the next one a try
I sing that when I'm miserable, and wonder why.
Then realise I'm feeling hounded & pushed around :)
Same as in Oliver's Army also by Costello.
Because of the line, "And I would rather be anywhere else, than here today."

Happily I haven't sung either since I started work in February.

I've been going through a David Johansen/Buster Poindexter/New York Dolls jag lately.

"Got a pair of shoes I swear that somebody gave me,
Mama says I look pretty fruity but in jeans I feel rockin'"

You funky but, you funky but, alright alright alright!

Well I ain't tryin' to be no jerk,
It's just that I just got off from work,
And I know you'd like to bend my ear,
I want to listen, and that's sincere,
Can't a fellow have just one beer,

Before the boss, the bank, the box full of bills,
The empty gas tank and it's all uphill,
The wife, the kids, and why do we all exist,
Add politics, religion, and war to the list,
Tell me is there anything that I missed,
And I'll get to the bottom of that,
After I get to the bottom of this

Well, I look outside and see a world on fire
They're lowerin' the boom and the creek's gettin' higher,
We gotta be ready cause we're on the brink,
I'll do better after just one drink,
Give me a minute so I can unthink,

About the boss, the bank, the box full of bills,
The empty gas tank and it's all uphill,
The wife, the kids, and why do we all exist,
Add politics, religion, and war to the list,
Tell me is there anything that I missed,
And I'll get to the bottom of that,
After I get to the bottom of this.

This one used to grab me by the throat. Back when J and I were together but with a breakup imminent.

Quote:

"No Surprises"

A heart that's full up like a landfill
A job that slowly kills you
Bruises that won't heal

You look so tired and unhappy
Bring down the government
They don't, they don't speak for us
I'll take a quiet life
A handshake of carbon monoxide

No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
Silent, silent

This is my final fit, my final bellyache with

No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises please

Such a pretty house, such a pretty garden

No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises please (let me out of here)
I still get a catch in my throat at the line about looking so tired and unhappy, and the government not speaking for us. These days though it's the bittersweet catch of memory, so it is kind of one of my favourite lyrics.

I've always loved this line from "He Went To Paris" by Jimmy Buffett:

Quote:

And the Summers and Winters
Scattered like splinters
And four or five years slipped away.

"Are You Havin' Any Fun?" Tony Bennett
(feat. Elvis Costello)

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/tonyb...vinanyfun.html

Hey fellow with a million smackers
And nervous indigestion
Rich fellow, eats milk and crackers
I'll ask you one question
You silly so and so
With all your dough....

Are you havin' any fun?
What y'gettin' out o' livin'?
What good is what you've got
If you're not havin' any fun?

Are you havin' any laughs?
Are you gettin' any lovin'?
If other people do,
So can you, have a little fun

After the honey's in the cone
Little bees go out and play
Even the old grey mare down home
Has got to have hay....HEY!

You better have some fun
You ain't gonna live forever
Before you're old and gray, feel okay
Have your little fun, son!
Have your little fun!

Why do you work and slave and save?
Life is full of ifs and buts
You know the squirrels save and save
And what have they got.....NUTS!

Better have a little fun
You ain't gonna live forever
Before you're old and grey, still okay
Have your little fun, son!
Have your little fun!
Are you havin' any fun?

I've always loved some lyrics from "Tomorrow Comes Today", by Gorillaz.
Whenever I remember this song this part pops up in my head.

Quote:

Yeah yeah yeah,
I'll pay,
When tomorrow,
Tomorrow comes today..
