Big-ass lava lamp

<img src="http://www.giantlavalamp.com/images/main_day_m.jpg">

The town of Soap Lake, Washington was once somewhat famous for its hot mineral bath spas, but its fortunes have declined over the years.

A group of civic-minded sorts is proposing to build a 60-foot tall lava lamp in the middle of town in an effort to boost tourism. The website and a gallery of the proposed structure can be seen here.

I'm not too sure about placing something like this in the middle of a street intersection. But if I happened to be in the general area I would drive a few miles out of my way to see it.

One pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small...

What makes them think that the blobs would scale to the size of the object they are in?

I think it's just a matter of getting the right difference of surface tensions, density, etc in the liquids. They could probably design the blobs to be any size they wanted.

Reminds me -- I need to go get another 15 watt bulb for my lava lamp...

How did those people get up on the balcony?

It's not a real picture. It's composite.

I knew that...I just thought it looked kind of funny with no stairs or anything.

I'm sure they'd tell you that they're on the other side :)

I don't care if it is carbon fiber, there are no steps! ;)

Go in the back door and lie on the bulb. Once you've warmed up, you'll float to the balcony. Or you can wait, and float all the way to the top.
