September 25, 2012: Oldest message in a bottle

Here is thought to be the world's oldest message in a bottle.

Quote:

It is 98 years old, and was cast into the ocean by Captain C. Hunter Brown, a scientist at the Glasgow School of Navigation, who was studying the currents in the North Sea.

The bottle was one of 1,890 bottles released on June 10, 1914, and the 315th to be entered into Captain Brown's log, which is still kept and updated by Marine Scotland Science in Aberdeen.
Still kept and updated. They are tenacious, those Scottish marine scientists.

So, released near Aberdeen, found near Shetland, we now learn that the North Sea currents flow northerly at a rate of about 300 miles/480 km per Century.

And with only 315 of the original 1890 bottles found, you yourself may now find another; and if you do, you will then become the world record holder for oldest message in a bottle. Off to Shetland wi' ye.

That is soooooo cool! One of my dreams is to find a message in a bottle by some eastern beach like race point beach in cape cod-possibly the world's best beach.

And with the oceans rising the way they are, the next one may be found in Ohio.

that would be totally cool by me.

(Sorry everyone south of Ohio...but our time for some beach-ness is loooooong overdue. There's virtually NOTHING to recommend about southern Ohio. Not even Cincinnati, not even Hocking Hills, not even all those Appalachian dopes who keep us all laughing at their fake injury law-suits and their oxycontin addictions. Nope - Ohio sucks pretty much till you get to Cleveland and then, well, you know, Cleveland ROCKS!

At least it's something that happens periodically around the world, and not notice of impending doom and gloom.

Naw, it circumnavigated the planet 12 times laying on a Caribbean beach for a few decades before deciding to go back to its home.
