Staying Put
Congratulations to wanderer on his new job. I don't intend this to be snarky in any way.
On to my story. Last Friday I turned down an incredible opportunity. 50% pay bump (after getting the same bump when I switched jobs last year), chance to make a big impact on a huge company. However, it would have been an onsite gig requiring relocation to Kansas City. Those of you who've heard me piss and moan know that I am bipolar and have a fragile functioning state. I have a low threshold for change. Too much too quickly and I fall apart. While it would be nice to be so close to friends and family (most in St. Louis), it would be a big gamble. I'm staying put. I don't dislike where I am. The flexibility to work from anywhere is great. |
Good for you, for knowing your mental state and what you can handle. Not a lot of people can choose the responsible route in the face of temptation.

Knowing what you can handle and what you need in terms of stability of situation is central for your health ... kudos to you for keeping your priorities in order and doing what's best for you!

Oh yeah, consider yourself very lucky to have a handle on your abilities/disabilities, and can make a comfortable decision for you.
If someone says you're being too conservative, that maybe it would have worked out to your advantage, just tell them you are comfortable with your decision... that's all that matters. |
Its good that you had choice and decided as per your priority. In my case it was more of a one way road. Future is after all the choices you make (or the ones that you don't make).

Staying put vs moving on is always going to be a personal decision.
Your reasons are valid, Padawan. The old chestnut "Money doesn't make you happy" has always been a conundrum to me, because lack of money certainly doesn't make you happy. But I am coming to understand how it can be true. 50% bump in salary is enormous. But if you are already happy then it's a risk you do not need to take. It's extremely unlikely it would have made you 50% happier. Good on you. |
You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em...

Yeah.
Thanks for that earworm, Zen. |
