This silliness dates back to least as far as 1955 at IBM and had already gone international by the early 1960s, when it was reported at the University of London's ATLAS computing site. There are several variants of it in circulation, some of which actually do end with the word blinkenlights.

Michael J. Preston recites the gem as being posted above photocopiers in offices as a warning not to mess with the machine in the first print reference from 1974.[2] The sign is also reported to have been seen on an electron microscope at the Cavendish Laboratory in the 1950s. Such pseudo-German parodies were common in Allied machine shops during and following World War II, and an example photocopy is shown in the Jargon File.
The Jargon File also mentions that German hackers have developed their own versions of the blinkenlights poster, in fractured English:[1]

Is this the oldest meme? Or does a meme have to travel faster than that? What's the oldest internet meme?

Undertoad 04-12-2016 12:50 PM

The oldest Internet meme.... I'm guessing "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" as that was the first time things started to get photoshopped and whatnot

Pre-internet we all had stuff posted on our walls that was xeroxed 800 times.

Sometimes I forget Cellar memes don't belong to the whole internet. I was trying to find "spit on my soul."

DanaC 04-13-2016 11:46 AM

'Spit on your soul' is from the Evil Dead films.

glatt 04-13-2016 11:58 AM

Maybe, but around these parts, it's from stacyv and Arsen.

DanaC 04-13-2016 12:35 PM

Yeah, I get that, I just mean it should come up more widely than just the Cellar because it is also a line from Evil Dead. Might even be where they got it from.

And - there's another 'spit on your soul' reference but I can't bring it to mind. A movie title maybe?
