7/13/2003: Other joined twins

And you think you have a tough life. These two are Ayara (left) and Jayara Ratun. They are 34, living in India. They make a living as, basically, circus freaks. This week a pair of Iranian conjoined twins died during surgery, and so Ayara and Jayara decided not to go through with such an operation. "If God has made us this way, then this is how we should remain -- together forever," Ayara said.

How do they poop? Also I wonder if thats a piece of brick under
the bottom curve of their torso?

They're wearing flip-flops on their hands, and I think I can see three flip-flops on the right hand side. I can't be sure, but they may have more torso behind them in the picture.

Any comments about "only the strong survive" vs. societal morals?

The two Iranians seemed to go against a standard of sorts among conjoined twins. In all the interviews I've seen regarding conjoined twins, including those that could be separated with "relative ease", most seem content being the way they are. They seem to almost enjoy being "together."

I wonder how often they get laid?

I read that these twins do share a pair of legs, but it looks like they're just hidden in the photo.

All I can think of is:

Shit, two alimony payments!

bmgb, do you remember where you read that? I couldn't find anything on them.:(

I look at the picture of these two, and all I can think of is the intelligence in their eyes, the look of mournful acceptance of their lots in life.

Renting oneself out as a circus freak has to be one of the most humiliating vocations possible. It is sort of a, 'isn't it bad enough that we are conjoined twins, but we must debase ourselves for the amusement of others?' thing.

I am saddened, yet filled with admiration for the Iranian twins who risked and lost their lives in an effort to live more normally. The human machine is magnificent when it works, and unspeakably terrible when it malfunctions.

Maybe even more amazing that the body can function when it is so fucked up.;)
