11/20/2003: Beached whale

http://cellar.org/2003/beachedwhale.jpg

I've seen a lot of beached whale images, including the infamous "exploding whale" video, but I've never seen a sperm whale beaching and that's why this one is interesting to me, anyway. This is one of a dozen such whales that landed on the west coast of Auckland, New Zealand. Researchers were trying to figure out what drove them there because the location they chose is unusual.

That's just sad.

Something I've always wondered about this: from what I've seen, they've always tried to push the whales back in. Why not use a large scale 'vacuum cleaner' to suck the sand from underneath? This should allow the ocean to flow under the beastie (no insult intended). Might not get him/her to leave the beach but it might be something...

It's amazing to think that these creatures once lived on land.

What they need is:

The Whale Rider.

She just lives a couple villages over...

It looks like it has been shot, just above the mouth. What's with that? Were they trying to put it out of its misery?

It looks more like a scratch to me, but if that was a shot I doubt it did much judging by the entry wound size. If I remember correctly whale meat is very tough and whales themselves are tough.

That's OK down to water level but where the sand and water meet the sand wants to level itself. So like Grampa's blow job, lot of sucking with little result.

Good one glatt. ;)

It is a really cool movie.

Sad picture, but hey, I've been to that beach! OK, I'll shut up about New Zealand... for awhile.

On topic: further sad news. :(

So they had bling teeth?

I heard of being jacked for your rims but that is some sick shit. They probably were capped, 'cause you don't want no spermie chomping your hand while you're ripping out his teeth and he may be still squirming.

Cochese 11-21-2003 08:27 AM

I'm trying to remember ever seeing an actual sperm whale. All I can think of are illustrations from books. Amazing picture and amazing creatures.

Cochese 11-21-2003 04:59 PM

I think the blood is coming from its nose.

Shivaaa 11-21-2003 09:49 PM

reports of navy sonar driving them ashore....

Cochise, whales don't have noses, they have blowholes.

I never thought I would use the word 'blowhole' in an actual discussion, but there it is.

That college degree is coming in handy, I can tell ya'.

Wolf, I share your delight, here, after a fashion. I now work in an industry where the term "blow job" is a standard and non-sexual descriptive item.

It seems that one of the two predominant types of building insulation is fiberglass or cellulose fragments. These products are installed by blowing them through a flexible duct to the portion of the construction being insulated. Therefore, any project where it is being used is called a blow job.

Great, huh? :)
