EDMONTON -- Corrections Canada won't let guards at maximum security prisons wear stab-proof vests because it sends a confrontational "signal" to prisoners. "If you have that kind of presence symbolized by (a stab-proof vest), you're sending a signal to the prisoner that you consider him to be a dangerous person," said Tim Krause.

So what signals are you sending without using the correct wear.

It's a Max security prison most of the prisoners are dangerous persons,or do the prisons in Canada only hold reasonable convicts who would'nt hurt a fly.

How about prohibiting private citizens from owning bulletproof vests?

Even if they were wearing vests someone could stab/shoot them in the arm/leg/head! I reckon the only way to go is full head-to-toe steel reinforced protective armour. Or lose the guards, get robots to deal with the prisoners. Human contact is too dangerous. Shit! Did something move? Shoot it, dammit!

Most wounds are to the torso, so the vest is a valid measure.

The very fact that they were put on in the first place means someone, somewhere was stabbed at a prison, thus validating, again, said protective device.

If the prisoners have their feelings hurt by someone wanting to protect themselves from a likely threat then that's just too bad.
