Any nascar fans out there?

Ok, so you're a fan. Are you a Bodine fan? I'm curious. He's from a town about 10 miles away from here and he'll be around to sign autographs all day...I think it's today. It's either today or tomorrow.

If there is anyone that really wants an autograph and some closeup pics of the car, let me know asap. I cant garantee anything right at this moment but I think I can get one...maybe a couple.

I dont give a rat's ass about nascar or Bodine, for that matter. I would be willing to take a short drive over there if there is any interest.

This offer is for any cellar member(s).

I have relatives over there that I could visit too, so it wouldn't be a real big deal to go there for someone.

I'm not a fan, but hopefully one will appear in this thread and answer the questions I've always had about this sport.

NASCAR = "National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing"

None of those cars have anything even remotely "stock" about them, so why do they call it that? And what is the deal with the pickup truck races I sometimes see on TV? They look like pickups, but again they have nothing to do with an actual pickup truck. What the hell is the point?

I don't have any idea. The whole NASCAR thing is a mystery to me. From what I gather, it's just an excuse for a hillbilly to drink a lot of beer and get obnoxiously loud in public.

Believe it or not, I am a "closet" NASCAR fan. I admit it. I don't know what the whole "stock car" thing refers to though. I just know which drivers look good in in their little racing suits

They started out "stock" back in the 50's. Now you have to own lots of stock and other assets to even think about building one.
Now the car and truck bodies vaguely resemble something manufactured by some one but everything else is dictated by NASCAR in the name of Homeland Security, er, um, I mean safety. It's not "fixed" but it's as "orchestrated" as pro wrestling.
Excuse me, while I duck.

My boss, who is ordinarily a nice, quiet, sensible, suburban guy has apparently been a closet NASCAR fan for years. He frequently makes the pilgimmage to Pocono Raceway. He was just there last week for some time trials.

One of our social workers (who is an older, somewhat daffy lady) is too. She makes tapes of the races that are only carried on cable for him.

Another of my coworker's brother's runs an ambulance company that provides medical coverage for the races (and also has the contract for the Philly sports complex) and so my coworker goes up all the time.

They all seemed so normal!

It's actually not a bad comparison. Both "sports" have larger-than-life heroes with sharply-divided fan bases, the same handful of familiar faces seem to trade wins amongst themselves, both are repetitive by nature in their execution, both have the distinct possibility that at any moment someone could screw up a maneuver and cripple themselves or their opponent, and the odds are pretty good that fans of either will get to see someone getting punched in the head by the end of the day. A strong Southern fanbase for both. Oh, and family ties -- the Earnhardts, Pettys, Andrettis and Unsers match up against the Von Erichs, Harts, Lawlers and Funks.

Samoans. That's what NASCAR needs, more Samoans.
