Get this wheel mouse wheeling!

My new Linux desktop box is startin' to be stylin' but now I have two questions.

One is simple. How come is it that my standard Logitech wheel mouse doesn't wheel? I read one comment that said there was an XF86Config setting (under "Pointer") that you had to set, and I've set that and restarted the display and still... nothin. I know somebody's got this going, anyone have any idears?

Two is complicated. My main beef is now FONTS. Having gotten your basic KDE desktop going, the biggest problem I have with it is the damn fonts. I know there are specific tricks that certain fonts have, to look good on displays. But in any case, these fonts just look terrible. Does anyone have good clean anti-aliased, display-corrected fonts going?

You've read the XFREE86 Font Deuglification How-to?

OK. Thank you. That gets me some things but not others. The desktop looks better, but the fonts in Mozilla are still cruddy. Looks like I'm waiting for the next release of XFree86 or something, in order to get broader support of what gets anti-aliased fonts to the applications.

OK. Finally went all the way and didn't just ADD the lines mentioned in that howto, but I deleted the line that causes X to look to the system's font server. And now, everything looks pretty damn good.

All I need is to have this wheel mouse wheeling. That's all I need. And to have the bugs fixed in Mozilla that I want fixed. That's all I need.

Hmmm. I use a trackball for a pointer, can't help you there.

And Mozilla is Mozilla...the standard Mozillaesque response is "Did you search Bugzilla" followed by "If it's not there did you report it to Bugzilla" followed by "How'd you like to contribute a patch to fix it?" :-)

Tony -

Send me your XF86Config (or XF86Config-4, whichever it is) and I'll see what's going on to keep your mouse from wheeling. Most importantly, you need the ZAxisMapping line. I don't have a Linux box up right now (reorganizing my bedroom), but it should look something like this:

ZAxisMapping 4 5

and I think there might be a few other little things. But we can definitely get it going - just email me the config (my email @ stuffnet/gaveup, if you please).

Well there wasn't even a pointer section in the -4 version of the file, but there was in the non-4... but I've added it in the -4... I'll just send both along.

Happened to bump into a wheelmouse resource while looking for something else.--[Gwen wants to bring up her USB TV Tuner on her Red Hat machine]

Colas Nahaboo X mouse wheel scroll page

Tony -

I've gotten no mails - did you send?

Also - if you're using Netscape (instead of Konq/Galeon/Mozilla), you'll wanna check out that page that MaggieL linked - it's got a lot of good resources (and will promptly be bookmark'd on my macine :))

My *brain* is lazy. When I first read the topic of this thread, I thought said "get this mouse wheel wheeling", and I pictured one of those rodent exercise cylinders...and thought it an ironic reference to UTs machine as being rodent powered, like Alan Shepard's " Why don't you just fix your little problem and light this candle?" referring to the LO2/alcohol-fueled Redstone.

That's why I only responded about the fonts issue at first. :-)
