1/22: Congoans carrying gas

http://cellar.org/2002/congogas.jpg

Take several people like this, looting gasoline by siphoning it into big drums. Take a still-hot lava flow right in the middle of it all. See that the siphoning creates a lot of gasoline fumes, which are flammable. When the fumes hit the lava, burst into flames, and carry those flames back to the siphoning operation.... BOOM. And that's how the people in the Congo were killed yesterday, at a gas station, trying to recover whatever they could from wherever they could.

Don't carry drums of gas over hot lava flows. What happens if one of these guys falls over?

That would be Congolese (singular and plural) according to the CIA. :)

Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner

In '66 and '7 they fought the Congo war;

With their fingers on their triggers: knee deep in gore.

For days and nights they battled the Bantu to their knees.

They killed to earn their living - and to help out the Congolese.

Good one, Griff! :)

These people thought carrying drums of gasoline over hot lava was a GOOD IDEA???

The guy with the red and yellow drum has a look on his face like "I'm am SO never doing this again..."

Heh heh many thanks, Nothing gets by you people. My brother told me he got to social studies class 5 minutes early one day and felt compelled to transcribe Lawyers, Guns, and Money on the blackboard. His teacher walked in looked at it for a long while shook her head and left it there. "I went home with a waitress, the way I always do, how was I to know, she was with the Russians too." Love that line.

Ballad of Johnnie Walker ...

IMPROVISED FROM LYRICS BY: Warren Zevon
TITLE: Lawyers, Guns and Money

I went home with Muslim students
The way I always do
How was I to know
They were the Taliban, too

I was studying in Yemen
I took a little risk
Send lawyers, guns and money
Dad, get me out of this, ha

I'm the innocent bystander
But somehow I got stuck
Between a rock and a hard place
And I'm down on my luck
Yes, I'm down on my luck
Well, I'm down on my luck

Now I'm fighting in Afghanistan
I'm a desperate man
Send lawyers, guns and money
The shit has hit the fan

Send lawyers, guns and money {4X}

How you perceive things

When I got on this computer, the monitor contrast was turned WAY down. Also the bandwidth is horrible and I was able to read the first few comments.

So I construed this image way differently. I thought a couple of people were carrying drums of oil across a rickety old bridge, with dark rock on both sides. I could see the guy carrying the green drum, but not the guy carrying the red and yellow one, so I assumed it was being carried lengthwise by two different people and they were crossing the bridge.

Go figure. I didn't realize my error until I saw the comment about the face of the guy carrying and red and yellow drum.

Griff 01-23-2002 07:07 AM

There is no way those drums are full, so think about how unstable they are. Gas sloshing around, walking in sandals over abrasive volcanic rock, the bungs may or may not be sealed very well so you've got gas seeping down your head and back fumes everywhere its amazing anyone succeeded long enough to get their picture taken. desperate...
