I think you may be thinking of Hindus. The buddhist position on vegetarianism varies among the very many sects of buddhism and its practioners. There are probably as many, if not more iterations of buddhism as there are of Christianity. Generally speaking, the cow is not more special than a cloud to a good buddhist who is in the throws of the absolute. Relatively speaking, they maybe have more compassion for the cow than for a cloud. Depends on the mood you catch them in.
