I'm one of the many who are now former journalists, by choice or otherwise --- and in my case, it was a case of my former newspaper suddenly deciding that the best way to make its 2005-6 budget was to buy me out (nicely) and send me packing two weeks before Thanksgiving (the American version, in case there are any Canadians here).
Newspapers all over the place are shedding personnel by the truckload because the bean counters are desperate to make near-impossible profit targets. And to be perfectly honest, newspaper salaries aren't exactly the creme of the crop.

there may be less reporters than 10 years ago, but i thought the point was that there were less crimes reported back then (industrial age) because there were less reports of crime.
