I have a Prizm, which is really a Toyota Corolla but was about $1000 cheaper. The name badge and a couple of body parts and some trim are the only real difference. It has been very reliable and inexpensive to operate. It's built very well.
They don't make Prizms anymore, but they do still take high quality Japanese cars and slap GM labels on them and sell them for less. Take a look at the
Pontiac Vibe, a small station wagon that's basically the same as the Toyota Matrix. It's apparently the most fuel efficient car GM sells in North America, but has lots of cargo room. Made in a Toyota factory in Canada. I don't know a lot about it, but it's worth looking into.
