I love 802.11b

So I'm sitting here in my townhouse, looking at my lovely PowerBook, thinking about Apple's new browser Safari and wishing I could play around with it. Unfortunately, Safari is kinda useless without webpages to render. Then I remember that I am living in a townhouse, and 802.11b is becoming more popular - especially to people that can afford these townhouses (rent: almost $4,000 a month - that's the kind of location I'm living in). I pull up my PowerBook, turn the Airport card on and - voila! - there's an 802.11b network called "linksys" - with no password. My network location for the Airport profile (it's hard to describe - use Mac OS X and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about) is set to DHCP, so I hop on the network and I'm crusing webpages in no time flat. My signal strength wavers between 3/4 and 1/2, and that's with the PowerBook (which has poor reception when compared to the iBook). So I'm guessing they're relatively near.

Anyway, as long as I don't use it too much, they probably won't notice. But it'll be nice to be able to check mail and read the Cellar while I'm home.

When I get my base station back and set up, I will not be so stupid as to leave a password-free 802.11b network for my neighbors to use.
