I think I get it . . . When you're up close you see the darker features, the angry squinty eyes versus the calmer relaxed ones. But when you're farther away, you see the vague shadows on the face that look like muscles. On the angry guy they're smoothed out like he's calm and on the calm guy, the shadows make it look like his forehead is scrunched up, etc.
Kind of neat, actually, though the faces look like something out of a horror film.
