after shes been using the forum for a short while, she will attempt to open a page and get a page not available message appropriate to the browser shes using. at that point, no page will open and i am unable to ping, ftp or release the ip. system resources still look okay, but there is no network connectivity whatsoever.

zonealarm under windows, the default medium firewall settings at install tiime in redhat. it didnt occur to me to try disabling zonealarm before my xp hard drive died, and im not smart enough to have figured out how to disable the linux firewall.

damn, i forgot to mention that. under windows, if we disable all scripting in mozilla only (this doesnt help in ie), it works for significantly (maybe an hour) longer before puking (this is why im so hesitant to try a new nic). same thing under redhat doesnt help.
