my dogs get cooked shank bones all the time and they love them. Of course, I make sure the bones are larger than the dogs' throats. Really, only cook them (I simmer them for two hours) because the wife hates the bloody mess on her floors/bed/sofa etc.
Once upon a time, Junior (the pit bull mix) was given a six-inch shank bone and he spent the next four hours chewing away happily...outside in the yard.
