Generally very obvious or very gross and embarrassing things go without saying. Or more accurately, obvious things "go without saying" while gross and embarrassing things are "better left unsaid".

For instance if someone asks you to pass the maple syrup at the breakfast table, he really wouldn't have to tell you he means to use it on his pancakes. You'd probably guess that if you saw a stack of pancakes in front of him. It would go without saying.

If he intended to give himself a maple syrup enema, it would be better left unsaid.
