This is the exact quote (from ESPN):
"Sorry to say this, I don't think he's been that good from the get-go," Limbaugh said. "I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. There is a little hope invested in McNabb, and he got a lot of credit for the performance of this team that he didn't deserve. The defense carried this team."
On the surface, the comment seems harmless. I personally didn't find it to be a big deal. Rush doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to Donovan McNabb. And you can't claim I'm biased b/c the Eagles are by no means my favorite team.
(And quite frankly, let's look at the black QB's in the NFL: They're all fairly good. Rodney Peete is probably the worst of them, and he still has starter potential.)
But it's what one could construe from the quote. Do I think Rush is racist? Honestly, no...plus, regardless of how outspoken he is, I don't think he would let himself slip up on something like that. But he has a history of being a firebrand. One could take Rush's comment to mean that black quarterbacks aren't as good as white quarterbacks. And unfortunately, in many cases, there are underlying meanings and feelings behind one's words. He could have merely said, "Donovan McNabb is overrated, and I think the NFL pushes him too much." Yeah, one could also misconstrue that, but the race issue is not front and center. Bottom line: innocent words? I think so. Stupid words? Definitely.
Rush was brought on by Disney b/c he pulls slang-type folks. No, not gun-toting hillbillies, but that all-important 25-to-54 male demographic. If we look at the ratings, who do you think are the majority of people that watch football? Who do you think are the majority of people that listen to Rush?
It's done though. Rush is out of job with ESPN. McNabb will throw for over 300 yards Sunday.
But I definitely want to see how this drug situation is going to play out. And what may be the funniest/saddest thing about it--if it is indeed true--is that the story was broken by the Enquirer.
