I just had a customer in my office who got a bill for $5276 from their former leasing company. The charge was for excess miles. She was over by 35,173 miles @ 15 c per.

She leased her new car from us 3 weeks ago. We had leased her the one she was turning in. I remember, at the time of the deal, asking the salesman what was happening with her miles. We have a form that addresses that issue. It exists because we commonly pay remaining payments or mileage penalties as part of the negotiated deal for the new car. Her form stated that we were ONLY returning her car....specifically NOT paying anything due to close out the old car. She signed it with the salesman, and obviously didn't read it.

If we had addressed it at that time, it would have added about $150 to her payment, and undoubtedly killed the new deal. The salesman is one of the ones who I consider to be relatively moral. Well....I DID.

That's how people get fucked. She assumed we were handling the end of her lease for her. It just never came up. On one hand, it's retarded of her to make that assumption. She is contractually obligated to pay excess miles that are on her car at return. She knew it. She just assumed that we were taking care of it. We didn't do anything wrong TECHNICALLY. I still think we fucked her.

It burns.
