i've always lived the night, so thats not really the issue.
the sun is not my friend.
if i go to sleep at 4pm, and then stay awake all the way 42 hours later, i might find it hard to go to bed at 10 am, and then if i can't sleep and have to report for duty at midnight, well, you can imagine how exhausted i am at work.
thats the kind of thing i suffered yesturday, and it showed immediatly as i dropped my 600 dollar cellphone in [a clean] toilet bowl, and as i was reaching to get it out, it flushed[automatic], anyhow i got it out after a 30 second struggle.
the phone, believe it or not, is working perfectly.
anyhow, you get the idea of how absent minded i got after working and working and not sleeping for a couple days.
anyways, i just woke up now, so i'm back to normal.
back to the topic...forget work, its not to blame for my insomnia.
my caffeine intake is pretty high, but i can't say that its to blame entirely for my issues.
all i can say to really describe it, is sometimes, after not sleeping for long period of times, i am unable to sleep no matter how much i try, and i go as far as 3 days without sleep even if the time to sleep is available.
its not really that big of an issue, until i have to work without sleeping, than its pretty bad.

lj, i don't drink.
skysidhe, my work is very interesting.
glatt, pitch black is very helpfull, as is music...what do you mean by white noise?
