White noise is like the hum of the TV on standby ...it's sound that prevents it being totally silent but isn't anything you can actually "listen" to which might keep you awake concentrating. You can hear it but you can't listen to it. People who are used to lots of noise can often filnd complete silence too "claustrophobic"
