Don't know if you were responding to my use of the words "politically correct", I would call the areas you mentioned as "current fads" and everyone will be competing for funds, grants, etc.

Instead I have found from personal experience that taking what you are currently doing or enjoy, and moving it slightly off center can actually lead to reasonable and enjoyable second sources of income.
It won't happen overnight without a major input of $, but with a longer outlook, a reasonable retirement income is not out of question.
