Once someone has contracted the bug they can be contagious for days before the onset of symptoms. You may have been previously exposed to someone who was asymptomatic at the time. Nothing you can do about that for others; because, you won't immediately know you've contracted it. It's another reason why annual vaccination against dominant strains is important to vulnerable categories of people.
