Oh, btw, moved to Portland, OR.
Did I mention that? Wife and kids are set up in a house 10 minutes outside Washington, in North PDX. Beautiful, looks like an art deco Bilbo Baggins house with a Redwood (!) in the backyard. Pears, apples, blackberries, blueberries, all growing in the fully landscaped front and back yard. 10 minute walk to the elementary school and 5 minute walk to the grocery store. Access just as easily to the light rail (or the highway, if for some reason).
I have a built-in office in the basement with 60 meg pipe and long-distance VOIP lines--after 2 more months travelling to Austin, building HL7 interfaces, I'm looking for remote contract work. Or local Portland IT work.
We are not socially isolated in Portland. We have grown-up friends, friends with cool kids, and we are not total oddball nerds here.
(I mean, we are, but everyone is.)

gives you a little joy or excitement or awe, then you're on the right track.
