I read
an article a few months ago that touched on the history of Febreeze's advertising. The gist of it was that Febreeze used to be odorless, and purely a product to remove existing odor. It was a huge flop because A) there was no part in people's cleaning routines for "going around spraying shit that you just cleaned" and B) everyone is accustomed to how they smell.
So they re-worked their advertising to include showing people going around spraying febreeze after they made the bed, cleaned the bathroom, etc; and they added scents, so you knew when it was there and when it wasn't.
