ATM errors take a monumental amount of time to resolve on this side of the Atlantic as well. The financial pages of the weekend press often relate the slow and confusing path to resolution.
On the other hand, I used a local ATM a while back and had to wait for the chap in front of me to complete his transaction. He retrieved his card, the cash appeared and he took the advice slip.
What he didn't do was take the money. I had to call him back. I'm not the quickest of thinkers, but I worked out that it was probably best to call him back rather than take the money to him.*
I didn't know how much was there and didn't want to leave myself open to accusations of theft. He could have withdrawn £50 but only £40 might have been dispensed.
I often wonder what would have happened if there had been no-one behind him.
