So, Who's Had the (Insert Type Here) Flu?
Selene and I are emerging from the throes of (apparently) H1N1. We both were felled on or about last Tuesday, and went to the doc on Wednesday. Her nasal swab came up positive for Type A, which includes H1N1. Mine was negative, but our symptoms were concurrent and identical...spiked fever early (I hit 103), muscle aches, respiratory nastiness, coughing, export quantities of sputum, headache, and blessedly...little to no gastric complications.
I'm not sure if it was a bonus that this crap hit on the eve of Thanksgiving, but it did mean that I only missed one day of work. Selene, who is asthmatic, has faired less well, missing three days of work, but making it to school all but one of those days. She is similarly behind the recovery curve, and is still taking breathing treatments at home. I'm just finishing up coughing up the accumulated scum. So...who else has had the bona fide real deal flu so far?

I was ill after I did my research trip. last month. Seemed fairly flu-like. Either that or a bad cold. I have no idea what it was, 'cause I never went to the doc, I just hibernated for a week.

Insert Type-A or Type-B. Most people will never know if they had H1N1.

I was swabbed for a flu test that came back negative, but I was told they are only accurate about 20% of the time. I certainly feel flu-ed. All the same symptoms, with bronchitis, upper respiratory infection, and what I call "haunted lungs" - (crackling, whistling, and moaning noises with every breath) wasn't enough to convince them to call it flu. Only reason I want to know is to find out if I should go ahead with the H1N1 vaccination now or not.
Hope you're feeling well soon.

Do they help?
After you are better I would get the pneumonia vaccination if you are at risk for asthma and bronchitis. It's not the flu that will kill ya...usually. When I get the flu my symptoms are mild. When I get the flu shot, which has been only twice in my life I get extremely sick. Then nurses have the gall to say the virus was already in me so that's why I got so sick. bs From now on I say let sleeping viruses lie. sorry mini rant |
