How'd you keep your kid in their big bed?

Rugrat was doing really well staying in her big girl bed, but lately has fallen out several nights in a row.

What was working was a 'speedbump' of blankets rolled up on the outer edge (other one against the wall) with a pile of her biggest stuffed animals on the floor to soften the fall if she did. I also propped a small pillow under the outer edge of her big one to make it kind of a ramp back into bed (if you can picture that).

I was hoping that you creative folks could enlighten me with what worked for you. Poor things gonna break her little pug nose, or worse an arm, one of these nights.

I did laugh one night though when I heard:
"whump" .........

"Mooooo-ooom, I fell on Bruuuu-no. "

Bruno is her stuffed dog that's bigger than she is.

why not a bed rail? they make cheap plastic ones that tuck between the mattress and box spring, and fold down out of the way for easy entry/exit. or you could take all the padding away, and let the child fall to some consequence once. that should keep her subconscious aware of the edge and it's perils even in sleep.

We used bed rails, although we never really had trouble with this. (Our problem with our son was consciously getting up out of bed . . . . . )

I thought bed rails were out of vogue because of the potential strangulation hazard.

You could take away the boxspring and frame and just put the mattress on the floor until she gets the hang of it.

If that's true, it never filtered down to us. Anyway, the "rails" we used were just a tubular frame with cloth mesh stretched over.

Hmmm... the Griff Youts are on futons in a loft so there's no where to go unless they work their way around to the ship's ladder. They clunked out of regular beds in the past but got the point after a couple spills. I guess I can't help except that if they have a soft landing zone maybe they'll learn without being locked in bed. [shrug]

The bed rails we had came with the beds and were solid wood boards. I can't see any strangulation hazard there.

My youngest girl move around a lot in her sleep. IIRC, she was still falling out of bed from time to time when she was ~9. We would hear a loud THUMP, then hear her grumbling as she got back in bed.

Well, of course she stayed in bed fine last night... dar, your story made me laugh out loud. I guess I'll just stick with the current plan, speed bump as deterrant, stuffed animal landing in case speedbump doesn't work. Mostly I didn't want a rail because it's just one more damn thing to store down the road. personally, I don't remember having any rails, and my bed was waist high when I was a kid. I do remember waking up on the floor, but not the falling part. Of course, it's been almost 30 years...

Except when bunk beds are involved.

Maybe it has to with with falling a distance less than their height?

I hate fallin from bunk beds.....especially when theres no bottom mattress, just bars

I only fell off once that I recall, but my dresser was right next to my bed and I ended up with my head wedged between them. Had to yell for my mom to come and pull the dresser aside.
