Lyrics with meaning

So, we've done Lyric Trivia, and trying to guess which band certain lyrics were from. And we've done "What cd is in your stereo right now". How about something new?

Lyrics with meaning. Lyrics that offer you new insight into life and change the way you view the world. Lyrics that can be read apart from the music as poetry in it's own right.

I'll contribute mine later tonight when I get home. :)

Stan Rogers 1949-1983 Canadian Folkie

I took back my hand and I showed him the door
No dollar of mine would I part with this day
For fueling the engines of bloody cruel war
In my forefather's land far away.
Who fled the first Famine wearing all that they owned,
Were called 'Navigators', all ragged and torn,
And built the Grand Trunk here, and found a new home
Wherever their children were born.

Their sons have no politics. None call recall
Allegiance from long generations before.
O'this or O'that name just can't mean a thing
Or be cause enough for to war.
And meanwhile my babies are safe in their home,
Unlike their pale cousins who shiver and cry
While kneecappers nail their poor Dads to the floor
And teach them to hate and to die.

It's those cruel beggars who spurn the fair coin.
The peace for their kids they could take at their will.
Since the day old King Billy prevailed at the Boyne,
They've bombed and they've slain and they've killed.
Now they cry out for money and wail at the door
But Home Rule or Republic, 'tis all of it shame;
And a curse for us here who want nothing of war.
We're kindred in nothing but name.

All rights and all wrongs have long since blown away,
For causes are ashes where children lie slain.
Yet the damned U.D.I and the cruel I.R.A.
Will tomorrow go murdering again.
But no penny of mine will I add to the fray.
"Remember the Boyne!" they will cry out in vain,
For I've given my heart to the place I was born
And forgiven the whole House of Orange
King Billy and the whole House of Orange.

Territories
-----------
I see the Middle Kingdom between Heaven and Earth
Like the Chinese call the country of their birth
We all figure that our homes are set above
Other people than the ones we know and love
In every place with a name
They play the same territorial game
Hiding behind the lines
Sending up warning signs

The whole wide world
An endless universe
Yet we keep looking through
The eyeglass in reverse
Don't feed the people
But we feed the machines
Can't really feel
What international means
In different circles, we keep holding our ground
In different circles, we keep spinning round and round

We see so many tribes -- overrun and undermined
While their invaders dream of lands they've left behind
Better people -- better food -- and better beer
Why move around the world when Eden was so near?
The bosses get talking so tough
And if that wasn't evil enough
We get the drunken and passionate pride
Of the citizens along for the ride

They shoot without shame
In the name of a piece of dirt
For a change of accent
Or the colour of your shirt
Better the pride that resides
In a citizen of the world
Than the pride that divides
When a colourful rag is unfurled

and now for something completely different

It was a tough call pickin from all of Townes' stuff but heres something lighter about makin choices

No deal
by Townes Van Zandt

Now this man down at the used car lot
tried to sell me four wheels and a trunk.
I said, "Man, there is no engine!",
he said, "The engine's just a bunch of junk.
You don't need no engine to go downhill
and I could plainly see, that that's the direction
you're headed in", and he handed me the keyes.

(I said) No deal; you can't sell this stuff to me
No deal, I'm going back to Tennesee

Well, I went to a doctor of the highest order,
he said I couldn't have a drink for a year.
One glass of wine on my birthday
if my birthday wasn't too very near.
Lord, he must have put me in a state of shock
'cause I made it for about two weeks;
then he sent me a bill
that knocked me flat off the wagon
and back down on my feet.

When true love knocked upon my door
she'd just barely turned fifteen
and I was a little bit nervous
if you know just what I mean.
But I've heard somewhere
that true love conquers all
and I figured that was that
then I started having dreams 'bout
being chased out of town
wearing nothing but my cowboy hat.

Well, I come through this life a stumbler, my friends
I expect to die that way
it could be twenty years from now
it could be most any day.
But if there is no whiskey and women, Lord,
behind them heavenly doors
I'm gonna take my chances down below,
and of that you can be sure.

A couple to add to the pot...

A broken soul,
stares through a pair of watering eyes,
uncertain emotions,
force and uncertain smile

or...

Familiarity breeds contempt.

or...

Where do I put the books?
there's so many I could read,
but they all are filled with lies.

Where do I put the lies?
There's so many I could say,
but it seems they're in the books.

The only ones that spring to mind atm... if anyone knows where they are from please try and guess

oh, yeah, of course there is always...

This silly song always makes me smile. I guess that's a life changer...

Comb your hair and paint and powder
You act proud and I'll act prouder
You sing loud and I'll sing louder
Tonight we're settin' the woods on fire

You my gal and I'm your feller
Dress up in your frock of yeller
I'll look swell but you'll look sweller
Settin' the woods on fire

We'll take in all the honkey tonks
Tonight we're having fun
We'll show the folks a brand new dance
That never has been done

I don't care who thinks we're silly
You be Daffy and I'll be Dilly
We'll order up two bowls of chili
Settin' the woods on fire

I'll gas up my hot rod stocker
We'll get hotter than a poker
You'll be broke but I'll be broker
Tonight we're settin' the woods on fire

We'll sit close to one another
Up one street and down the other
We'll have a time Oh brother
Settin' the woods on fire

We'll put aside a little time
To fix a flat or two
My tires and tubes are doing fine
But the air is showing through

You clap hands and I'll start bowing
We'll do all the law's allowin'
Tomorrow I'll be right back plowing
Settin' the woods on fire

-Hank Williams Sr.

The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret

by Queens of the Stone Age

Well I’ve got a secret, I cannot say
A modern movement to give it away
You’ve got somethin that I understand
Hold it in tightly, call on command
Leap of faith, do you doubt?
Cut you in I just cut you out

Whatever you do
Don’t tell anyone
Whatever you do
Don’t tell anyone

Look for reflections, in your face
Canine devotion, time can’t erase
Out on the corner or locked in your room
I never believe them and I never assume
Stuck in believe, there is a lie
Promise is promise, an eye for an eye
But we’ve got something to reveal
No one can know how we feel

Whatever you do
Don’t tell anyone
Whatever you do
Don’t tell anyone

I think you already know
How far I’d go not to say
You know the art isn't gone
And I’m taking our song to the grave

He he. I was thiking more like Peter Gabriel

Hans plays with Lotte, Lotte plays with Jane
Jane plays with Willi, Willi is happy again
Suki plays with Leo, Sacha plays with Britt
Adolf builts a bonfire, Enrico plays with it

It's a knockout
If looks could kill, they probably will
In games without frontiers-war without tears
Games without frontiers-war without tears

Jeux sans frontieres
Jeux sans frontieres
Jeux sans frontieres

Andre has sa red flag, Chiang Ching's is blue
They all have hills to fly them on except for Lin Tai Yu
Dressing up in costumes, playing silly games
Hiding out in tree-tops shouting out rude names

It's a knockout
If looks could kill they probably will
In games without frontiers-wars without tears
If looks could kill they probably will
In games without frontiers-war without tears
Games without frontiers-war without tears

Jeux sans frontieres
Jeux sans frontieres
Jeux sans frontieres

Saul Williams- Coded Language

Whereas, breakbeats have been the
missing link connection the diasporic
community to its drum woven past
Whereas, the quanitised drum has allowed
the whirling mathematitions to calculate
the ever changing distance between rock and stardom.
Whereas, the velocity of spinning vinyl,
cross-faded, spun backwards, and re-
released at the same given moment of
recorded history yet, at a different
moment in time’s continuum has allowed
history to catch up with the present.
We do hereby declare reality unkempt
by the changing standards of dialogue.
Statements such as “keep it real”, espe-
cially when punctuating or anticipating
modes of ultra-violence inflicted
psychologically or physically or depict-
ing an unchanging rule of events. will
henceforth be seen as retro-active and not
representative of the individually deter-
mined is.
Furthermore, as determined by the
collective consciousness of this state of
being and the lessened distance between
thought patterns and thier secular
manifestations, the rule of men as
listening recepticles is to be increased by a
number no less than 70 percent of the
current enlisted as vocal aggressors.
Motherfuckers better realise, now is the
time to self actualise.
We have found evidence that hip hop’s
standard 85 rpm when increased by a
number at least half the rate of its
standard or decreased to 3/4s of its speed
may be a determining factor in heighten-
ing consciousness.
Studies show that when a given norm is
changed in the face of the unchangeing the
remaining contradictions will parallel
the truth.
Equate rhyme with reason Sun with
season.
Your cyclical relationship to phenomena
has encouraged scholars to erase the
centers of periods thus symbolising the
non-linear character of cause and effect.
Reject mediocrity.
Your current frequencies of understand-
ing outwiegh that which has been given
for you to understand.
The current standard is the equivalent of
an adolescent restricted to the diet of an
infant. The rapidly changing body would
acquire dysfunctional and deformative
symptoms and could not properly mature
on a diet of apple sause and crushed
pears.
Light years of interchangeable with
years of living in darkness
The role of darkness is not to be seen as
or equated with ignorance but with the
unknown and the mysteries of the unseen
Thus, in the name of:
ROBESON, GOD’S SON, HURSTON
AHKENATION, HATHSHEPUT
BLACKFOOT, HELEN
LENNON, KHALO, KALI, THE THREE
MARIAS, TARA, LILITH, LOURDE
WHITMAN, BALDWIN, GINSBERG,
KAUFMAN, LUMUMBA, GHANDI
GIBRAN, SHABAZZ, SIDDHARTHA
MEDUSA, GUEVARA
GURDJIEFF, RAND, WRIGHT
BANNEKER, TUBMAN, HAMER
HOLIDAY, DAVIS, COLTRANE,MOR-
RISON, JOPLIN, DUBOIS, CLARKE
SHAKESPEARE, RACHMANINOV
ELLINGTON, CARTER, GAYE
HATHOWAY, HENDRIX, KUTI, DICK-
ERSON, RIPPERTON, MARY, ISIS
THERESA, PLATH, RUMI, FELLINI
MICHAUX, NOSTRADAMUS
NEFERTITI, LA ROCK, SHIVA, GANE-
SHA, YEMAJA, OSHUN, OBATALA
OGUN, KENNEDY, KING, FOUR LIT-
TLE GIRLS, HIROSHIMA, NAGASA-
KI, KELLER, BIKO, PERONE
MARLEY, SHAKUR, THOSE WHO
BURNED, THOSE STILL AFLAMED,
AND THE COUNTLESS UNNAMED
We claim the present as the pre-sent as
the hereafter we are unravelling our
navels so that we may ingest the sun.
We are not afraid of the darkness we trust
that the moon shall guide us.
We are determining the future at this
very moment.
We now know that the heart is the
philosopher’s stone
Our music is our alchemy
We stand as the manifested equivalent
of 5 buckets of water and a handful of
minerals, thus, realizing that those very
buckets turned upside down supply the
percussive factor of forever
If you must count to keep the beat
the count
Find your mantra and awaken your
subconscious
Curve your circles counterclockwise
Use you cipher to decipher coded
language manmade laws
Climb waterfalls and trees commune with
nature snakes and bees
Let your children name themselves and
claim themselves as the new day for
today we are determined to be the chan-
nelers of these changing frequencies into
songs, paintings, writings, dance, drama
photography, carpentry crafts, love
and love
We enlist every instrument: acuostic,
electronic
Every so-called race, gender, sexual
preference
Every per-son as beings of sound to
acknowledge thier responsiblity to uplift
the consciousness of the entire
fucking world
Any utterance un-aimed will be
disclaimed, will be maimed - two rappers
slain
Any utterance un-aimed will be dis-
claimed, will maimed - two rappers
slain.

Kindred spirits moving along the spiral
I can see you up on another level
It's too great a fall
And I can't reach you to pull me higher
But I don't seem to get much closer or any more far

What would you tell me, if I could hear you speaking?
If you could touch me, how would I know the feeling?
I just can't imagine
But I try to do it anyway
I wish I was moving faster, I wish you'd drift back
But it just wasn't meant to happen
Very soon I'll have to

Face the fact
Some things never come together
Parallel lines running on forever
And you can't turn back
There is never any starting over
Parallel lines never do cross over

It's a challenge
Gotta make myself remember
Facing the truth, well, that doesn't mean surrender
What is bravado and how much is a force of will?
I know that the world is full of opposites that attract
But unless we ignore the physics
Very soon we'll have to

So I send you the gift of empathy
If you'd once in your life acknowledge me
I have visualized so thoroughly
That when I think of me I think of we

Can't face the truth
It means that we must surrender
Understanding won't satisfy the hunger
It whittles away at the destiny we fulfill
And like an animal running wild
You can't call it back
And it's just gonna make it harder
When it's finally time to

It's like a train that's stuck running on a track
Parallel lines running on, running on, running on

"Parallel Lines" from the "Nearly Human" album, Todd Rundgren
