6/13/2003: Baby buffalo

This baby buffalo is frolicking with its parents at the Cincinnati Zoo. When this picture was taken, the little guy was only four days old, but 60 pounds (compare to the adult which can weigh up to 2500).

Its interesting to me that a holstein calf (your garden variety black and white dairy critter) commonly weighs in at 90 to 100lbs at birth. Beefers tend to be a little smaller like this guy. I'd assume its because ease of birth is important for these wild ones?

Oh no! Thars a song in my head! Buffalo gal won't you come out tonight, come out tonight... hmmm... I wonder what that tune means?

Man was Al Gore on to something or what? quick search and... Apparently the tune is quite old and Buffalo refers to the town so its not a racial thing, except that it was commonly performed in black face back in the day.

Yeh, the wings must be taken off at birth.

De-winging makes them easier to fence in.

And the wings are more tenderer.
It looks like the big one is scaring the *poop* out of the calf.
