Thank you, Lamplighter. I'm so glad I didn't just click on the 'Update' button! I don't have time to wipe my hard drive and start again, and there's no way I will contemplate using Pages instead of Word. As you say, Pages is an imbecile of an app, inadequate for just about everything. I haven't used Quicken so far, but I use Powerpoint constantly and can't have compatibility issues. And I don't plan to pay $79 to install 'Parallel', which will likely have its own issues.

Apple may be on its way to a major loss in market share.

Thanks, UT. My laptop has 2011 but my desktop only has MS Office 2008. I'll keep that in mind.

Isn't Openoffice available for Apple? I have an older version of MS Office and use that along with Openoffice on my PC and find both usable.

The newer versions of office don't gel so well with Open Office. It's fine with just plain text, but if you have to use formatting features (tab space for example - when moving from Word to Open Office infills with a block of dark grey), or include tables and charts, then it goes belly up.

Ummm... I sort of checked with the On-line Quicken community,
and found in the past month there were 2 people that had problems with the
installation of current version ofQuicken Deluxe via Parallel on Mavericks,
But they both got it resolved when they realized they were not using
the proper set-up procedure during the installation.

I have bashed the Quicken Essentials for the Mac, but I should also say
that QEM does everything it is supposed to do in terms of live updating
directly from bank- and investment- accounts.

I personally just don't use that functionality, preferring to do it manually.
Even though I do use my bank's internet bill paying service,
I haven't yet gotten used to the idea of giving access directly
into my bank account to a corporation on the internet.

Office 2011 is the best way to go for any kind of professional document publication on the Mac. I had a customer that used Pages to access documents on a network file share. The amount of problems we had with file locking were such that I will never recommend it as a serious alternative. We did not have these problems with Office or OpenOffice.

OpenOffice is great for recovery of older Word and Excel documents, as they reverse-engineered the file formats and did a better job than Microsoft did at interpreting them. However, for document creation, if your time is money, don't use it. It messes up formatting.

Office 2008 was a good product, but 2011 is quite incredible, and just got updated.

The virtualization solutions are good, but only if you want to run Windows apps you cannot get on the Mac.

Hey... a really good thing has happened... Intuit has responded to MacFanatics !

I made a trip to the local Apple Store as a very unhappy camper, to
try to get some help connecting Quicken Essentials for the Mac (QEM),
running on the Mavericks OS, with Pages and/or Numbers.

I first met with a very concerned and helpful Apple staffer who sheperded me
up through the "Genius" hierarchy, finally reaching the "Trainer" who had the best ice breaker.

"A Mac user having trouble with Quicken Essentials ? Well, Duh !"

In any case, it seems that Intuit got the message from the Mac community.
Intuit has released a version of "Quicken 2007 OS X Lion compatible",
which runs on the new Mavericks OS 10.9.1, for only $14.99
A quick download, and it's up and running

For me personally, this solves so many problems !

It seems most apple user problems can be solved by throwing money, you just have to figure out where to throw it.

I haven't readd through everything but want to mention that someone I know who has everything MAC told me to update to Maverick OS because it's better and more efficient. So I did. Haven't done much with the laptop to know the issues. Hmmm....haven't done much because I'm a long-time Windows user and I don't find MAC very intuitive. :-( kinda regret getting it and now it's too late. :'(

Not really...

Intuit will refund full price of Essentials ($40) while the Mavericks version is only $15.

The upgrade of my 2003 iMac was needed only because of outdated software
... there were no hardware problems.

Like I said, once you figured out where to throw it.

Replace (throw money) rather than update for free.
