I know for a fact that the local Safeway donates all their day-old pastries/breads to local food banks. I'll ask around at other, smaller stores, though.

Whenever I visit a small convenience store nearby, I ask about their old veggies/fruits, and on occasion I've been lucky enough to arrive just after they've sorted through the displays and taken the yucky things out. Unfortunately, I'm not the only one who's discovered this wealth of chicken food - occasionally they tell me "Oh! Someone else was
just here for the same thing, and took it all!"
I'll have to ask the storekeeper if they toss out old bread, as well.
