7/24/2003: The running of the ostriches

Hilarity! We're in the town of Irurzun in northern Spain for a very important festival: the running of the ostriches. This is actually a recreation of the running of the bulls, but with a big ol' bird instead. I would never run with the bulls, but I would definitely run with the birds. There needs to be more than one, though.

The expression on the bird doesn't look like he is enjoying being a taxi

Great pic UT. If Unknown is right, that explains why the "cardinal" is assisting him.

It looks like there's another bird in the picture, his/her head is sticking up on the top right.

Am I wrong, or is that fella checking the birds cup size? He sure does have a jolly look on his face.

I don't think I want to run with the ostriches, either. They can kick the shit out of you, man...and they bite.

Maybe a vet?

I wonder why the guy in the red sailor hat has a stethoscope around his neck. ? Odd.

I saw an ostrich race, with jockies riding them and all, at a fair. It was weird. Their legs bend the wrong way - look like something from "The Dark Crystal".

They can knock a grown man on his ass by pecking him once, real hard. Ouch. Anyone see "Dude Where's My Car"?

They're actually more dnagerous than bulls. If a bull is chasing you, there's a good possibility that he may run past you if you lie down. Ostriches and emus have strong enough legs to rip out everything that makes you a special person.
