Could your computer have been set to back up picture files in a cloud someplace from where you could retrieve them? It might have been done so those pictures could be accessed from multiple devices.

If I was having the trouble beest had between a transfer program and external hard drive, I would move or back up (copy) the pictures any way I could to something unconnected to the system before working on it. That might be a cloud, some other smart device, memory stick or writeable DVD. It might even be a memory stick I was already using for something else that I'd temporarily store the pictures on. Just tossing some possibilities out there.

You can run on board diagnostics for relevant programs to see if there are corruptions or incompatibilities that it can fix.

If you have any online product support, you might be able to get a specialist to do another search by remote access.

Yeah, I could do all that. Sadly, lethargy/grief/whatever is a bit of a problem for me right now. I was pretty chuffed with myself getting my act together enough to put a concerted effort into hacking the account etc etc etc and am pretty fucking devastated that didn't solve a single problem. It wasn't even the first account this week. I was on a roll and now I'm gutted. And that's just how it goes. I still pay $20 a month for his phone account because I just don't want to deal with turning it off and there just might be an account somewhere that I have yet to need/discover whose only rescue option is a text to that #.......

Yes, I know. Knowing doesn't make it any fucking easier. Neither does logic. or anything. I'm just griping where the kids can't see me feeling hopeless. Allow me that?

Are the photos still on the memory card in the camera? I have like 6 memory cards I cycle through and it takes a long time for the cards to be overwritten, even after I have transferred the photos to a couple drives.

I wipe the card every time I transfer pics.

Maybe I shouldn't do that?

@ Monster...

You've probably already tried this, but...

The default file naming system on my camera goes IMG_1234.

Have you tried searching the various possibilities for the default file name from that camera? Such as, a search for "IMG_", and then just drill through the results till ya find the Rome group.

Might work.

Sorry, monster. Sometimes I think the holidays are more trouble than they're worth.

I will keep going, thanks. That was the "bucket list" holiday. He'd always wanted to see Rome and Pompeii He was so happy. He could barely walk, we used wheelchair assistance at the airports, but he walked round Pompeii for 7 fucking hours in 105 degree heat

It just gets worse. we are doing the FAFSAs and the motherfuckers are double dipping from what i can tell. They are taking my income to be our joint income from last year (he made at least 75% of out income) and then are counting assets from this year which include the life insurance to replace that income/cushion the transition. Why can I not catch a fucking break? Don't you think losing your life partner would be enough? I have absolutely no fucking wiggle room to pay any tuition. I earn pin money. I need to get a better job, a real job but I'm struggling to keep all the plates spinning as it is Even filing the claim on my insurance to be reimbursed for money I have already paid out and desperately need seems too hard, even though it's not. And yes, I'm depressed. Who wouldn't be. knowing it is sadly not a miracle cure and there's no checkbox on the FAFSA for parent too fucking miserable to participate and protect family.

I don't even think the amount I have in "investments" is enough to pay full tuition for both of them for the 6 years they have remaining between them, never mind their living expenses and books -they're both engineers. What am I supposed to do to survive? I'm 48 years old and didn't work for 17 years. I'm just at the beginning of my "career", even though I'm closer to retirement age than college age. This country is amazing sometimes, but other times it just fucking sucks.

The American way, maximise profit, destroy any sign of empathy that tries to rise above personal friends/family level. Empathy must not under any circumstances be allowed to infiltrate the corporate structure for it will weaken the Capitalist system.

Give the bereaved tons of paperwork and Sisyphus level tasks to keep them busy while we glean every penny possible from their holdings like we did when America was great. Grieving must be done outside of normal office hours, you have from 5 PM to 8AM for non business matters.

My age has given me the dubious gift of witnessing this scenario over and over and over again. It sucks, it always sucks, a pain that will dull with time but never go away.
CPAs and MBAs are immune to any trace of empathy, or other human weaknesses while working, it's the only thing tw was ever right about.

I know you don't give a shit about my opinion, but I would at least hint to the kids that money is going to be tight in the future. It's only fair to warn them in case worse comes to worst and we dive into another recession.

The girl can probably make it on her smarts. You may have to hook the boys up with some cougars who will pay their tuitions in exchange for their *ahem* services. It's that; or, the military for its education benefits. Wait until Trump pulls us out of all foreign interventions before exercising the military option.

For now, Rx: Take two Quaaludes and call me from Las Vegas.
