Important bassist Louis Johnson, one of the Brothers Johnson and session player for Quincy Jones, dead at 60. You have heard Mr. Johnson's work on half the hit records of the 70s and 80s. He was a monster.
This song showcases Mr Johnson's aggressive pop/slap technique in full. Just the first 15 seconds of it is enough to give you an idea: You could find him everywhere: Of course, the brilliant "Strawberry Letter 23", in which Mr Johnson's parts created a hidden rhythm that was one of the secrets to the single. You've never heard most of his part because it was mixed so perfectly and became part of the song, but here is the isolated bass part, and believe me, it's just unbelievably genius: |
