We use 'Fresher' for first year of uni. 'First year' for first year of secondary (high) school and first year of college.
Sophomore isn't used as far as I know. Of course it's possible it's used in some of the southern red-bricks but I haven't come across it m'self. |

(school is not the same throughout the English speaking world, either -In the UK, for example, one starts High School at 11 and stays there for 5-7 years -and wears a uniform .)
