good news: spoke with a brewery today and got an invite for a tour, to shadow the brewer for a day, and on my deathbed I'll receive total consciousness.
bad news: son of a friend eavesdropped on Mrs. Foot talking with son of a friend's mom about our imminent split. Being the sensitive and caring friend of our son, he immediately sought out our son to offer his sympathies and condolences. (genuinely; he's a very sweet boy whose parents have also split recently) Luckily, my wife handled it with uncharacteristic grace and aplomb since I was not around. By the time I spoke to him he was pretty chill about it, relieved wen I assured him that he and his sister wouldn't need to re-locate, I'd be here daytimes many days, occasional nights (for now) he knew where I'd be when I wasn't here, and that it had nothing to do with him or his sister and that it was because, get ready for this part, the part he divined on his own, it was because I have trouble sleeping. If that's what he needs to wrap his head around it, then OK. In some ways it's not far off the mark.

So instead of bad news, it's more like could have been a lot worse news.

Good news:
My oldest daughter and I spent Friday driving 175 miles to rent a 26-ft truck and loading it full up with her household of furniture. I then spent yesterday driving the truck back to PDX, where she and I unloaded it into her new (to her) house. (No accidents or harmed body parts, but nobody needs that much stuff !) Today, we are both exhausted, but we still have 3 large pieces to come down from the upstairs of our house where she has been living for the past year, along with a multitude of boxes of books and papers, and clothes and computers, and, and, and.... Bad news: The truck rental expires in 5 hours at 11:30 this morning |

Good news:
We did manage to get the rented truck back on time. No broken goods or injured bodies or lost tools. It was a struggle getting the big chair and bigger couch down the stairs, but just when needed, Lady Gravity came over and helped us out a lot. We only had to take 2 doors of their hinges to get all the larger pieces of furniture into their new rooms Bad news: None FWIW: This is the 4th truck I have rented from Pensky, and I hardily recommend this company. Their web site prices are ridiculously high, but they seem to always give enough "discounts" (AAA, AARP, vets, pet owners, being a nice person, etc. etc....) to make you feel you got a good deal More importantly, road service, unlimited mileage, and especially... no hassles about normal wear and tear damages. ... not like another company with initials something like U-H |

All of Penske's businesses seem to be first class operations... plus, or maybe because of, he's a nice guy.
Kudos on a successful operation, most importantly with no casualties.

Good news: two exams down.
Bad news: two to go. The worst one is tomorrow morning. The one on Wed I haven't studied for yet. Marathon session coming up tomorrow afternoon/night ...

Good news: we are eligible for a class action lawsuit against our health insurance company. Their reimbursement rates were found by whatever court to be unacceptably low. Anyone on their plan who saw an out-of-network doctor and had to pay the difference in cost themselves will get an extra 5% of the amount the insurance company paid. So for example, if the doctor charged us $1,000, and the insurance company reimbursed us $200, the court has decided I am owed an extra $10. Woo! It doesn't sound like much, but actually, given our proclivity for out-of-network doctors, a rough estimate leads me to expect at least $400-$600, all told.
Bad news: We have to document the shit out of these eligible claims. First we have to print off the Explanation of Benefits from the insurance company showing what was claimed, and what was paid; then we also must provide proof that we actually paid the difference (and didn't just throw the bills in the trash, I guess.) They want a cancelled check, a credit card bill, or a statement from the doctor showing payment. So far, I have gone through past tax binders and flagged 75+ EoBs that I have to copy. I have called the three main providers most of these fall under, and fortunately they have each agreed to send us a ledger of our entire account, which will put all charges, and evidence of payment, in a handy 1-2 page list, instead of having to copy the receipt for each appointment (which I do have, just like I have every EoB since 2009, but I really don't want to copy them all.) It will be worth the work, in the end... but what a huge pain in the ass, just to claim money that is supposedly owed me to begin with. |

Aetna. I got the same letter, but only had one broken arm tended to, and only paid the deductible, so I threw that letter away.

You can still get the standard claim, I think it's $30 or maybe $40 for every year you were a member, without having to do any proof at all. If you've been on your plan for several years, it could be worth the stamp. (You can print off another form from the website even if you threw yours away, too.)
