March 21, 2008: Holy Cow
Actually it's not Holy Cow, it's Holey Cow.
Well technically it's fistulated cows. Cows that have had a fistula (porthole) surgically installed, so researchers, and lurkers, can see the digestion process in one of the cows 4 stomachs. No, it doesn't hurt them and in reality, in exchange for this indignity, they lead long and pampered lives. Having witnessed this several times during my misspent youth, I can personally attest, it smells much worse inside the cow than it does when it comes out the back end.

So how much better trained is a veterinary than a people doc?
Michigan State (among others maybe) had a cow with a glass bubble for a belly.

Ohhh, pierced bloated cow is the worse smell ever. It stays in your nostril for days.
Whodathunk grass could smell that bad. |

i would be easy for these cows to diet. it must be easier if they can, literally, watch what they eat.
for me, the smell would be sufficient. |

Being a DVM is just as, if not more complicated then being an MD since you have to absolutely KNOW all aspects of total health. Unlike most human medical professions where you can specialize in one particular area.

One of our docs thinks vets are much better trained that MDs, at least as diagnosticians ... for the most part, a vet's patient can't tell him where it hurts or described symptoms.

Around here, a lot of DVMs limit their practice to certain types of critters, usually ones kept as household pets. If you have an exotic or large animal, they refer you to another vet, or a University animal hospital.
But you're right, val5150, in that the animals they do treat, they have to know everything about them. Everything about a dog is a lot different than everything about a turtle or parakeet. That's a lot of learning!

Did anyone watch the video? The hole leaks. Yuck. What about flies getting in there? Does the 'porthole' have a lid?

Yes, they have lids, removed for pictures.
Oh, and welcome to the Cellar, Kasszia.
