why do men kill their families?

This is not the first such story to come out of our current economic crisis. Explain to me, if you can--why? Isn't it better to be poor than dead? Do these guys honestly believe they are preventing their families from suffering? Or is it more of a . . . if I can't be happy and prosperous, nobody will! kind of thing.
