The Trouble with Chill Pills
This is a book review by the Center for Neurobiology and Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco.
![]() It would cost you $31.50 to read it here. Quote:

Fascinating.
When mum was a kid, her mum was prescribed some purple pills to help with 'depression' and 'exhaustion'. From time to time she'd let the girls have one between them and they'd all get busy tidying the house...not a regular thing just something that happened a handful of times across a few years. It was basically speed lol.

When I first started work, I worked with a woman who got pills like that, to help her dieting. She was up washing down the paintwork at 03.00 and repainting the front door and other urgent tasks like that. She used to bring in elaborately iced cakes which she'd just knoced up - before starting work at 08.30! We loved it, especially as she wouldn't want to eat any of them helself (and I was thin as a stick in those days, so no guilt.)
I was born too late for all the groovy stuff on prescription!

Oh I dunno. Seroxat has some interesting effects if abused. Though...the downside very much outweighs any pleasantness.

I actually chose to stay on an (upped) dose of Citalopram rather than take a new anti-depressant with a more sedative effect to help me sleep. I must be growing up or something! Usually I'm all about the next proferred solution.
But the drug I was offered (which I can't for the life of me remember) often increases appetite, and the last thing I want is to start putting weight back on, even for the sake of a good night's sleep. I'm about holding steady now, ready for another big push before Christmas.

They had someone on NPR recently who just wrote a book about his tour in Afghanistan. In the interview he mentioned being prescribed some meds. I just found this article from June 2008.
