HDMI
From my research, this is the best way to connect a hi def tv to the cable box and dvd/blue ray player. There are a variety of cables, and not much info about the differences.
Does anyone have advice about what to make sure to buy, or what to avoid?

Don't spend more than 20 dollars including shipping on a cable. They are digital, so they either work perfectly, or they don't work at all. It's not like if you get gold plated connectors on a Monster cable they will do the job any better.
Go to newegg and buy a $5 cable with $10 shipping. |

Wait, here's a better one. Only $10K. If you read the reviews though, it's worth it.

Seriously, though. Wikipedia has a chart to tell you about the different (1.0 through 1.4) versions. I'm 99% sure that all versions will work equally well in your situation, but you might want to read your owner's manuals to see if there is some feature you have that requires the latest (1.4) version. Or just buy the version 1.4 because it's backwards compatible.

That's great. Once I bought a Horse Head Mask, then I was immediately moved to buy a cable!

Hdmi and DVI are the same thing ,
hdmi has sound , Dvi doesn't, depending on how you have your sound arranged Dvi may do for your video We have a receiver that will do Dolby 7 (10 speakers Byotches !!!), One thing i have learned though is that Coax ( Plain old cable ) is FASTER than HDMI , ( More info to process ) as in we some time have an echo from our kitchen tv to our living room setup , ive tryed switching over to Optical sound cables , it helps , but there is Still a slight delay between the 2, yes the kitchen tv feeds from the setup in the living room
