Angry Forced downtime

Hey gang,

It would appear that after 5 years, my computer has decided to die. And the funny thing is...UT and I had just discussed what it would cost to build a new one. I was originally going to put it off until next month, but now...

I can't do a whole lot of posting from work, so it looks like I'll be out of the loop for a bit. Hopefully, I'll be back up in the not-too-distant future.

See ya when I see ya.

Ha-ha, sucker!

Unfortunately, that's not enough time for me to reclaim my posting crown, seeing as I've slowed down dramatically now that I have no one to argue with and try to make semi-intelligent posts (unlike you, ya goofy bastard).

Good luck on the computer. Tony selling you one of his old ones?

Well Syc had mentioned to me that he was kinda intrigued by the Walmart Lindows boxes, and I said let's see what $300 buys you at Newegg. It turns out that with a spare CDR and not considering cables, and if you're happy with MX440 video built-in to your mainboard, about $325 will get you an Athlon XP2000+ if you select carefully.

Newegg is pimpariffic. Remember to factor in shipping, and make sure the cheap case you selected has a PSU. I would think that you're including 512MB of RAM, which is appropriate. We could actually set the fucker up with Red Hat 9 (which is pretty nice) as sort of an experiment. And if it didn't work, he could drive over to your house and get Windows installed. Fun!

I actually think RH9 would be workable for him. Heh. Didn't think I'd ever say that.

When you're building for a target of $300 you still have to drastically cut anywhere you can. This means the additional $25 difference between 256 MB and 512 is meaningful, because it means you can keep the Athlon 2000 and not have to settle for a Duron 1.3. It means you can only configure a 40 MB drive.

It also means that the theoretical price of Windows would be a huge percentage of the price of the unit. Like a third of it.

I created a thread in Technology for this, so we can discuss and stuff.

If we can't get 512MB in, I will cover the extra $whatever to get it up to 512MB. I insist. 256 is like the bare minimum of bare minimums to me now. A gig is where it's at, baby.

Greetings from Exile

Good evening from the Willow Grove Kinko's.

I feel incredibly lost without my 'puter (the damned thing is like heroin!), but after talking with UT tonight, the new one is going to be worth the downtime.

Dave, it's all about the quality, not the quantity, though I blow you away on both.

Much love to the peeps in the Cellar, but 20 cents a minute can add up real quick...later!

Exile, Day 6

You would think that not having a puter would force me to do other things around the house for a change...

Nope. Now I just sit in front of the idiot box instead.

I already knew I could deal without the puter, though I must admit that it's hard not having it around.

I'll make this short, since I'm at the workplace, so I leave you with this...

Fear the nuggetcam!
