I think the Amish are quite interesting, in terms of their attempt to resist becoming worldly. Of course, because their kids are exposed to the "English" world on a daily basis growing up, fewer and fewer of them choose to remain in the community ... although that's what keeps a lot of them in the faith, the sense of family and community, because the lack of running water, electricity, and PlayStation represents some major hardship in my world view at least. I have been amused on more than one occasion by the concessions to modernity some Amish families make ... no phone in the house, but one on the pole outside is okay. It is sad to see the Amish farms surrounded by developments these days, though.

I am indifferent towards them.
It's not my place to judge them. Yet I feel that letting supersticious beliefs(aka religion) guide your life is wrong. As is cutting yourself off from the world. The reasons are as follows: I feel that by letting religion rule your life one makes him/herself merley a thoughtless sheep following the "rules" set down not by god but by another man for god never wrote a word in the bibile. I also feel that refusal to adopt technology as quickly as possible is an insult to mankind. It's technology that sets man appart from the lesser animals. Furthermore I feel that it's wrong for the Amish to live in the US, count themselves as citizens and yet try to cut themselves off from the world. They pay miniscule taxes and refuse to take part in wars. In a way, they might as well not exist - they're of no benifit to the country. Finally, last time I paid a visit to the Amish community in PA I felt that it was more like a theme park than anything else. The Amish were gladly selling whatever they made for ludicrous ammounts of money and the visitors were stupidly buying it. "Ooh its bread that looks exactly like the bread from (insert local grocery store here) but costs three times as much! I must have it!" Half the time I wonder if these Amish are just posing. I had one of them ask me FIVE times if I wanted to ride in his stinking cart. |

I actively dislike my Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. The progress of the human race will set us all free.

I know Amish folk aren't real keen on newfangled machines like zippers and stuff.
What do they think of velcro? Something about Amish and velcro together makes me laugh. I have no idea why. Sorry. ![]()

The Amish make the best cookies in the world. I'm waiting fro my grandmother, who is good friends with an Amish lady, to send me a recipe. When she does, I'll test it and post it.

Gradually, the music began to get softer and softer, then cuts out altogether...just as a buggy comes up over the hill towards them. They just stared at the Amishlings inside the buggy as they rode by, while they tried to look completely nonchalant. By the time they passed by my friend and rounded the curve to their left, the music kicked back up again.
