9/25: Tornado damage
![]() It's still hard to find any images that aren't WTC. News sites are just not covering anything else. So it was oddly refreshing to see news images of something else. This is in Maryland where the power of a tornado tossed cars around like rolling dice. ![]() ![]() |

I'm in Northern Virginia, so this was right near me. My dad works at WETA in Arlington and it blew the windows out of the 6th floor and lobby in one of their buildinds. No idea why the 2nd-5th fared better
![]() As far as I know, my friends at College Park are okay, but 2 kids were killed when their car was overturned. They noted that a few thousand students were evacuated from dorms during the storm, and a lot of them had to sleep in another building 'cause their dorms suffered damage. Nature is a beast... |

I was disappointed by the news coverage it received in Washington last night. I checked the Post, NBC4, and WTOP...little if anything.
Rho and I used to live in Mount Rainier, which is just to the southwest of College Park. We used to hang out in College Park regularly, particularly for dining, liquor purchases, and doing laundry. Apparently, all this occurred around 5:30 PM ET last night. One year ago, at about that time, I would have been exiting the West Hyattsville Metro station (which is one stop away from College Park) and making the short walk back to my apartment from work. Now granted, this sort of thing can happen anywhere at any time, but this hit a little too close to home for me. ![]() |

Looks like modern art.

Living proof once again that cars and tornadoes don't mix.

That's my dorm
The building in the background of the first image was my dorm (Easton) when I was a freshman at UMCP.
The Washington Post online edition has a LOT of stuff about the tornados today. Including a description of what happened to the two students who were killed. Seems they were in a car which got picked up and thrown OVER Denton hall, which is another building built on the same plan (8 stories) as the one you see. BTW, if the University of Maryland parking authority is as efficient as usual, most of those cars already have tickets for parking in the driving lane, improper display of permits, and the like. |
