Ow! Another hard drive failure
Remember the Quantum drive that failed 2 months ago? This afternoon the OTHER Quantum drive on the system, purchased and installed with the earlier Quantum drive, also failed... in pretty much the exact same way (suddenly a TON of read errors).
I've managed to recover everything, and we're all cool now, although the bad drive is still in there (in here?) and I have to schedule an outage to replace it. Probably at 2am tonight while I wait for the meteors. Y'know, at this point, I feel really secure with the system, more secure than I've ever felt. There have been times when the Cellar hardware was co-located at an office in downtown Philly. That meant when stuff went wrong, I had to drive down there IF they were open, hoping that it was something I could solve right there. One time a failure happened after hours and I couldn't get to the machine until Monday. But now, I have a spare motherboard, spare drive, spare cables and even a spare machine. Everything's close by so if I find an error, I can work on it with ease. Bottom line - there were a few hours of down time, but everything's fine now and everything will continue to be fine. |

ow!
Makes me feel bad for the 36GB Quantum drive I just bought since it was $200 for a 10K SCSI one.
Doh! Next time I'll stick with seagate. |
