Is there an appliance repairman in the hizouse

our dryer is attempting to dry our clothes sans heat. I think it will take a lot longer that way. anyone know any good honest local appliance repairmen? i don;t and when i try to search online all i get are those referral things that will 'have someone call you.' .....caaaahhhhhk!

I always start by asking the neighbors for a reference. Alternatively, pick up a neighborhood newspaper (the ones that they drop in your driveway for free) - they always have ads for handymen.

If its electric, I'd flip the back open and see what I could see - it could be an easy fix. If its gas, I wouldn't touch it.

Yep! electric, it'll be the thermostat or the heater.

First thing to do is disconnect the exhaust duct in back and run it again. If you get warm air blowing out, the duct is clogged somewhere....find and clear obstruction.

If cool air blows out, your element is likely out....replace it.

If nothing blows out or only a very weak air current blows out, the internal duct is clogged with lint...clean it.

Clothes dryers are not space shuttles.

yeah, you don't need a repairman, i've changed out the element on my old (now my ex's) dryer. it's also a good idea to go ahead and replace the thermostats too while your at it, and it's a stupidly easy task too!

stupid easy it may be, but i'm feeling pretty fucking macho right now. i restrung my heater element. the coils had broken, thereby making for great difficulty in carrying the current around to heat the element. yep.......right as rain now.....yep....

think i'll go shoot sumpin.

restringing heater coil

That worked for me too, the first time, then it failed again. My guess is that same power was coursing through even less resistance and thereby stressing the next weakest section even more, leading to the next break...

Eventually, I couldn't stretch the coils any further and I was tired of faking the crimp-on connectors. They were melting. This was a bad thing ready to happen.

The good news is a new element (in it's own little metal box like a catalytic converter) was less than 50 bucks. No more repairs.

Good luck.

no. I called the home despot's parts dist center, and had a restring kit sent. mine was fucked. broke in two spots in the middle. no hop ein restringing them.....they were too btrittle anyway. this is a professional like repair. cleaned out all of the lint that had built up here and there, too. works better than it did......apparently, it had been working at half power for a while with one broken coil. I rock.
