Oy Vey

I had a hard time figuring out exactly where to put this ...

Current Events? Well, it's a news article, but no, not quite current enough or large enough of a story.

so ...

Philosophy? It does have to do with a religious practice, and one about which there is a lot of debate, but no, it's not really a philosophical issue.

so ...

Parenting? It involves kids, that for sure, and a decision that parents have to make for their children, but no, it's not really about parenting, per se.

so ...

Health? Again, while clearly a health issue, heck, it's even in the health section of the newspaper that it's run in, but no, not really health in the way we're using the section here.

Back again I come to home base, to post this article, which someone else headlined "Making a Mountain out of a Mohel."

so ... it could have gone in that bad headlines thread. But that's more about the headlines than it is content of the articles.

Now, to actually comment on the content of the article.

Man, that's just damn nasty ... not just from the infection control aspects of the situation but when you realize what the Rabbi has actually done, even if he's stating it's in a religious context, other mohel's say that's not the way it's done ... how many years has this wierdo been sucking infant penises?

Quote:
Under Jewish law, a mohel -- someone who performs circumcisions -- draws blood from the circumcision wound. Most mohels do it by hand, but Fischer uses a rare practice where he uses his mouth.
It's not just the catholics. I knew it. Other religions are just quieter about it.

Ok, Yeah, but aren't the parents and everybody there to witness it? It's not like it's done in secret, is it? If the guy was getting off---wouldn't everyone know and tell on him?

Ah, but he's the Rabbi and if he tells the parents that this is how it has been done for many thousands of years of Jewish History, etc. etc. ... the absurd and criminal becomes acceptable.

And he probably did the same to their other male children. And depending on how long he's been doing this, to them and their siblings as well ...

WHAT is SEXUAL about an infant/child/adolescent????? I so don't get this. I "get" a lot of abberant behavior (as in: understand it) but I do not get this. An infant???!!! ok, so, I'm a naive-whatever. I just do not see this. You all think this is sexual?? A barely out of the womb being?????

Brianna, I'm confused, are you suggesting that we are strange for thinking the worst about this rabbi? Look at this way: what is not sexual about putting a penis in one's mouth, regardless of whom it happens to belong to?

This is very, very odd. Even for organized religion.

On a lighter note, this reminded me of the Seinfeld circumcision episode where they had a "bad mohel."

I'm trying not to freak out. HOW can this be? Sometimes I just wish things were other than they are. I don't get it and I "get" a lot of weird things. It just saddens me beyond all hope. I am hoping (hopelessly) it is not what is appears to be.

I'm still freaked about the fact that this healthy infant is getting his tiny johnson sliced with a blade by some guy. Sure the blood sucking is disturbing...too.

Wrong, disgusting, unhygienic (obviously), and downright creepy, yes. But was the guy doing anything sexual? I doubt it.

I wouldn't consider anyone who assumes the worst about this to be overreacting, but I do wonder why we assume the worst all the time.

Seriously, I think it much more likely that the guy was doing the procedure the way he thought was most effective. Way off base, wrong and just plain gross, but truly, do you really think it was sexual? To get blood to come out of a wound, I suck on it. Granted, it's usually my own finger that I do this to, but still. The very simple logic of it is there.

It says in the article "...uses a rare practice... " which implies that it's not completely unheard-of. So maybe it's innocent in a misguided sort of way. Then it's just down to the unhygienic factor. I really hope that's the case, because if it isn't that would make him a very special kind of evilly wrong person.

....still.

I'm still hoping that it's some sort of weird hoax.
